Tuesday, May 20, 2008 Foster mom charged in death of child, 6 NEW YORK A foster mother has been charged with killing a 6-year-old girl with a powerful anti-pain patch, authorities said Monday. Joanne Alvarez, 54, was awaiting arraignment on second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of child. Prosecutors did not have the name of her attorney. The victim, 6-year-old Taylor Webster, was discovered unconscious Sunday afternoon in Alvarez's home and was declared dead about two hours later, police said. Before her death, Webster had complained of neck pain, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

"Squeaky" McLaughlin, 80, of Fourth Avenue, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at the Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness. Born on June 23, 1927, in Whitehall, he was the son of the late William McLaughlin and William GLENS FALLS William "Bill" Johnston, 47, of Lake Avenue, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at his home following his battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.

Bill was born on June 10, 1960, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Virginia (Moore) John- ston and the late Arden "Red" Johnston. He graduated from Fort Ann High School in the Class of 1978, and entered into the U.S. Navy. During his 4 years in the Navy as an airframe mechanic, he traveled overseas in Greece and Spain; he spent a considerable amount of time stationed in Brunswick, Maine, where he photographed much of nature, including some impressive sunsets. Bill married Susan Looker on May 25, 1986, at the Fortsville United Methodist Church in Fortsville, N.Y.

and they settled in Glens Falls. For 10 years, Bill worked in the greater Glens Falls area installing hand-crafted hardwood floors. For the last five years, he was employed as an Exception Filler at Ace Hardware Wilton Retail Support Center. Throughout his life, Bill had enjoyed fishing, hunting, taking photos, spending time laughing and conversing with friends and family, listening to classic rock and reading countless books. Besides his mother, Virginia Johnston of Fort Edward, Bill is survived by his wife, Susan of Glens Falls; his daughter, Lind- Josephine (Lemley) Marr.

Edward joined the United State Navy and served in World War II. He worked for several years for Lake Champlain Coal and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the American Legion, Post No. 83 of Whitehall. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helene (Caputo) McLaughlin; six children: Gary McLaughlin and his wife, Ilo, of Crown Point, Helen Davis of Whitehall, Pamela Kilmer of Whitehall, Kevin McLaughlin and his wife, Bon, of Chester, Todd McLaughlin of Richmond, Va.

and Ann Potter and her husband, Richard, of Whitehall; two brothers, Wil- liam McLaughlin and Leslie Marr, both of Whitehall; two sisters, McLaughlin and Frances Doty, both of Whitehall; several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Beth was employed at The Arc Otsego in Oneonta as an Individual Personal Coordinator. Beth was the "Biggest she worked very hard in losing over 100 pounds in the past year and half.

She is survived by her son, Lawrence K. Hammond Jr. of Worcester, N.Y.; her daughter, Tanya Hammond of Cooper- The Post-Star, Glens Falls, N. Y. BRIEFLY ter painkiller, then by applying a prescription patch containing fentanyl, a strong narcotic, to her neck.

Susan Gail Collins Dunn Susan Gail QUEENSBURY Susan Gail Collins Dunn, 45, of Regency Park, North, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Glens Falis Hospital, with her loving family by her side. Born on Feb. 23, 1963, in Corinth, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Roberta (Whit- Mr. Albertson graduated from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1956 and was awarded an M.Div from Palmer (formerly Eastern Baptist) Theological Seminary in 1959.

He served as pastor to a number of churches until 1976, at which time he accepted a full time position with the New York State Job Service as an employment counselor, while continuing as a supply minister as the need arose. He retired from New York State in 1999 and continued doing supply work when requested. In his retirement, he did regular volunteer work with the Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center, teaching basic computer skills to senior citizens. He was an avid photographer and a computer "whiz" and very much enjoyed doing several promotional pieces for the Village of Schuylerville. In addition to traveling, he loved the outdoors, and he and his wife did a lot of camping, including a number of cross country trips, one being a month long camping trip through the western U.S.

She grew up in Warrensburg, and attended the Warrensburg School District. She worked at the Stanton Nursing Home in Queensbury for many years. She is survived by her precious son, Dirk; her loving sisters: Maxine and her husband, Thomas, of Tupper Lake; Earlene and her husband, Ross, of Warrensburg; Shirley and her Gary Ross, of Warrensburg; Bonnie and her husband, Alex, of Ausable Forks; ALBERTSON ALBERTSON her twin sister, Sandra Irwin and her husband, Philip, of Warrensburg; Ethel and her husband, Mark, of Minnesota; and one devoted brother, 1st Sergeant Roy Collins and his wife, Tess, of Kentucky; 11 nieces and nephDUNN ews, along with several cousins. Harrington, 59, of Murray Road, Middle Grove, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Whitehall, April 25, 1949, she was the daughter of Gladys C. Davis and the late Herbert J. Davis. Mary Jo worked at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs for 28 years, retiring in 2007.

She enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her son, John Harrington. She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Harrington her son, Thomas E. (Erin) Harrington Jr.

of Glens Falls; four grandchildren: Taylor, Alyx, Aubrey and Michaela; her mother, Gladys C. Davis of Watervliet; three brothers: Nelson J. (Barbara Jean) Davis of Ballston Spa, Michael J. (Irene) Davis of Watervliet and Donald P. (Noel) Davis of Troy; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

And two-thirds of the subway elevators had at least one breakdown last year in which passengers were trapped inside, The New York Times reported Monday. "This organization is very, very good at subway car maintenance; it's very good at bus maintenance. But maintaining auxiliary equipment it hasn't done as well," said Howard H.

Roberts president of New York City Transit. "I think that we are in the process of trying to create the same competence in elevator and escalator maintenance that we have in buses and subway cars." The system has about 200 elevator and escalator mechanics, who receive as lit- Associated Press tle as four weeks of training, a fraction of what they would receive elsewhere, the report said.
