It appears so far that the cost to Skidmore will be limited as well, Carter said. Adirondack Community College in Queensbury offers some benefits to domestic partners, said Joseph Olson, the college's vice president for student and administrative services, but specifics were not available from the college on Friday. The State University of New York system, of which ACCi a part, began offering benefits to unmarried partners of employees in 1995, according to a list compiled by Human Rights Campaign, a national gay and lesbian advocacy group. Other colleges offer benefits Other colleges and universities in the state also offer the benefits, including the City University of New York system and all colleges affiliated with Columbia University, as well as 10 other colleges and universities. According to the group, the number of employers offering such policies has been growing since the Village Voice newspaper in New York City announced its policy in 1982.

Nationally, domestic partner benefits are offered by slightly more than 100 colleges and universities and nearly 4,000 businesses, including 100 Fortune 500 companies. does not appear that any local businesses offer such benefits, however.
