The Post-Star. Glens Falls, N.Y. LOCAL Tournament draws 93 onto ice for some good fishing C't Sunday. February 1 3, 2005 Saratoga Annual event raises money for two fire departments By GERALDINE FREEDMAN CorrvsjUHulvnt 4L- Jfcflfcll caught each hour. Yrue money came from the registration fees, Bodnar said, with anything left over going to the fire departments.

There was no set goal as far as the money, he said, only to have a great day outside. And that was just fine as far as Paul Willson was concerned. "I love to be out. There's always hope. Seeing the flag up holds the joy of it," he said.

Saratoga Town Board Councilman Fred Drumm stopped by to check on the action. "We used to catch monster fish here," he said, recalling the many fishing adventures he had as a child growing up in the area. "This is the best place to fish in the country." fishing poles. A tip-up is a reel with a small red flag attached that is set over a hole cut into the ice. As a fish bites on the bait and pulls the line, the flag flips up to alert the angler.

Using live bait like shiners, which are 3-inch-long silvery minnows, attracts bigger fish, Paul said. Walking among the fishermen were tournament judges in pea-green vests. Because the area is designated only for catch-and-release fishing, the judges weighed and measured each fish as it was caught. By the end of the day, the largest pike caught weighed in at 11 pounds, 8 ounces. I'rizes also went for the biggest fish Paul, as he watched Scott get his picture taken holding the fish before releasing it back into the water.

Scott Willson said the fish was the biggest pike he had ever caught, The tournament, a fund-raiser for the Quaker Springs and the Victory David Nevins fire departments, attracted 93 entrants up from 73 entrants last year, said Jay Bodnar, event co-organizer. From the entrance to the marina to almost a quarter of a mile south, fishermen dotted the ice with only a few shanties looking to catch the biggest Northern pike or crap-pie Almost all of the fishermen were using tip-ups rather than SARATOGA The fish were' really biting Saturday morning at the second annual ice fishing tournament at the Alcove Marina on the Hudson River. No sooner had Scott Willson pulled out a 28-inch Northern pike that weighed in at five pounds, 12 ounces than two 1 other fishermen not far from Willson yelled out that they, too, had caught something. "The fishing is pretty good today," said Scott's brother, Angljrs watch their lines Saturday on the Hudson River during an ice fishing tournament to benefit two Saratoga County fire departments.
