Whitman Alice Ruth Hoag Rachmiel Levine insulin pioneer, dead at age 87 7 Til I Queensburv; a step-son. Marvin Hoag and his wife, Viv lan of Hartford; four stepdaughters. Kathleen Andrews and her husband, George of Hartford, Miza Barnes and her Charles of Greenw ich; Marion "Mary" Evans and her husband, Walter of Hudson Falls and FORT EDWARD -Alice Ruth Hoag. 63. of Lower Allen passed away on Thursday, Feb.

26, 1998, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a short illness. Born on March 13, 1934 in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of Emil and Meta(Kaftka) Greif. Her husband, Robert QUEENSBURY Walter L. Whitman. 76.

a resident of Queensbury, went home to be ith the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at home after a long illness. Born on Jan. 14, 1922. in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Benjamin H.

and Viola (Stone) Whitman. Mr. Whitman attended the Glens Falls High Los Angeles Times Dr. Rachmiel Levine, considered the father of modern diabetes research for his work with insulin, and a former executive at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, has died. He was 87.

Levine, former president of the American Diabetes Association and the International Diabetes Foundation, died Sunday of heart failure in Boston, City of Hope officials said Wednesday. The internationally respected Whitman Levine joined the City of Hope in 1971 as its executive medical director. By then he already was well known for his breakthrough discovery at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, showing that insulin lowers blood sugar by stimulating movement of glucose into cells. Working with colleagues Morris Goldstein and Samuel Soskin, Levine with his' "Levine Effect" of movement introduced a new era of research into how hormones modify cell function. Hoag BIRTHS School.

During World War II he served in Germany as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. Later he was self-employed as a plumbing and heating contractor and also worked for the Tri-County Cab Company, retiring in December of 1996. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 121 of Glens Falls where he served as Master in 1967 and 1971. He also served as secretary and chaplain.

In June 1995 he received a Grand Lodge appointment of Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of China. He was the founder of the first Boy Scout Troop in the Town of Queensbury where he served as scout master. Mr. Whitman also was a member of the Queensbury Central Fire Department where he held several offices. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls and a former trustee.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Hughlan Whitman and a sister. D. Hoag, Sr. died on March 30. 1997.

Alice owned and operated a family' restaurant in New Jersey and most recently was employed by the former Joy Store in South Glens' Falls. She was a communicant of St. Mary'sSt. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls. Alice was a member of the Glens Falls Area CB'ers Club with her late husband Dunk Hoag.

She enjoyed reading, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Besides her husband, Alice was pre-deceased by a son, Steven J. Burch, who died in 1979 and a step-grandson, Duke Barnes, who died in 1997. Survivors include two sons, Alan J. Burch and his wife, Karen of Conn, and Robert D.

Hoag, Jr. and his wife. Colleen of Fort Edward; a daughter, Alizon "Ali" R. Groom and her husband, William of Lester FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla Lester C. Haas, 73, of Fort Edward and Fort Myers, died Wednesday, Feb.

25, 1998, at Health Park Medical Center, Fort Myers Beach, after a short illness. Born June 25, 1924, in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Ernest and Irene (Curtis) Haas, He had been a resident of Fort Edward for 50 years and in his early years was employed by J.W. Brown Trucking and Fort Edward Express Company. For 34 years, he was a member of local Union of Operating Engineers 106 as a heavy equipment operator and as a master mechanic. He retired in 1986: He was also employed by the Shoreline Restaurant and Marinaln Lake George.

Besides his parents a sister, Nancy Virgil died before him. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Irene (Holdridge) Haas; two George Hyde Pierce Olive DeSantis. Survivors include his ife of fifty-five vears. Eltla L. (Clute) Whitman of Queensbury; a son, Ronald J.

Whitman Sr. and his wife. Barbara of South Glens Falls; a daughter, Karen L-Whitmari of Queensbury; a nephew. Buz Clute of Tampa. Florida ho prev iously had resided with him for many years, four grandchildren, Ronald J.

Whitman Jr. of South Glens Falls, Walter L. "Rusty" Whitman of Queensbury, Stephanie M. Weatherwax of South Glens Falls, and Jennifer L. Whitman of Glens Falls, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 1998, at the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls with the Rev. Gary Stefanski, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at the West Glens Falls Cemetery, Queensbury. Calling hours are scheduled from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

on Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Regan and Denny Funeral Home, Quaker Queensbury. New York stage, George was a performer all his life on the Saratoga stage as an actor with the Town Hall Players and as a magician, on the ski slopes, on the golf course, on the tennis court, and most memorably, on the dance floor. Laura died on May 16, 1995. A year later, George moved to Vermont, where he resided at Pillsbury Manor. He died peacefully at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with his four children at his side; Thomas Pierce, a Vermont banking executive; Nancy Morgan, an arts administrator from Alexandria, Barbara Pierce, a television news producer in Los Angeles; and David Hyde Pierce, an actor in Los Angeles. In addition to his children; he is survived by two sisters, Helen Watkins of Millbrae, and Mary Louise Richard of Fayetteville, Tennessee; and six grandchildren Laura Morgan, John Morgan, Heather Pierce, Gregory Piercet Randy Pierce and Emma Pierce Rempel.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Thomas Parke on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Episcopal Church in Saratoga Springs. Visiting hours are tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bussing-Cunniff Funeral Home, 1 30 Circular Street.

The family requests that memorial donations be sent to Bethesda Episcopal Church, 41 Washington Street, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1 at Regan and Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga South Glens Falls. Burial will take place at a later date. Maternal grandparents are Karen SARATOGA SPRINGS George Hyde Pierce died in Burlington, Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. Born on July 29, 1910 in Richfield Springs, N.Y., he was the son of Helen Hyde and Arthur J.

Pierce. After graduating from Saratoga High School in 928 and Williams College in 1931, he intended to go to New York City to pursue an acting career. Concerned about finding work during the Depression, he decided to follow his father's advice and joined the Arthur J. Pierce Insurance Agency in Saratoga Springs. It was there that he met and fell in love with his secretary, Laura Marie Hughes-George and Laura married on Aug.

5, 1944, just before he was sent to Italy, where he served with the' ski troops of the U.S. Army's Tenth Mountain Division in World War II. After the war, George and Laura made Saratoga their home. While building a sixty-year career in the insurance business at the agency now named Pierce, Pratt Brown, he devoted himself to many community organizations including Bethesda Episcopal Church, the Boy Scouts, the Greenridge Cemetery, and Saratoga Hospital. He joined the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club in 1938, served as president from 1963 to 1964, and in 1996 was honored as a Paul Harris fellow.

Although he never made it to the Ludwig SOUTH GLENS FALLS Ludwig Osburg, 92, a resident of South Glens Falls, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Saratoga Hospital Nursing Home. Born on April 10, 1905, in Schenectady, he was the son of William and Ottilie Klein Osburg. Mr. Osburg was a 27 year veteran of the U.S.

Navy. During this time he served in Panama, Central America, Europe and four years in Asia including service with the Yangtze River Patrol. In World War II he served in both the North Atlantic and the Western Pacific theatres of duty. Following retirement from the Navy he was employed in the mechanical engineering section of the General Electric Company Research Laboratory in Schenectady until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the American Legion Post 553 of South Glens Falls and the Masonic Lodge, 121 Free and Accepted Masons of Glens Falls.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 54 years, Norma Pike Osburg, who died in July, 1986. TICONDEROGA Francis Joseph O'Connor, 71, better know as "Oakie" since childhood, died unexpectedly at his home on Kalker Road in Ticonderoga on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998. He was born in Ticonderoga on 27, 1926, the son of Joseph and Pearl (Rivers) O'Connor. Oakie served in the Army during World War II.

He worked for New York Telephone and later Reale Construction in Ticonderoga. In his retirement years he has enjoyed bis children and grandchildren and the planting of trees around his children's homes. Oakie married Mary Emma Catlin on Oct. 10, 1948. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs.

Mr. Leach was a lifetime Hague resident and a member of the Hague Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr.

Leach was employed by the New York State Department of Public Works as a laborer from 1943 until his retirement in 1979. He is survived by his wife, Madeleine H. (Howard) Leach; one sister, Marguerite West of Hague; three step-daughters, Helen Beldcn.
