Dunham OBITUARIES Vickie (Carr) Brown But the prose also could be lethally direct, as when Kempton covered Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's arrival in Washington in the 1950s, "Poor Dwight Eisenhower stood waiting for Khrushchev's plane door to open yesterday as though he were waiting for some White House attendant to come in with a package that ticked," Kempton wrote. He otlen found redeeming qualities in barbarians without glossing over their depredations. "Murray was the first writer I ever read to say that mobsters didn't control the world, that they were mostly just truck drivers without jobs," said Nicholas Pilcggi, a chronicler of organized crime.

"The man has brought more honor to newspapers than anyone in my lifetime," said Jimmy Breslin, another Pulitzer winner who worked with Kempton. Among other honors, Kempton received George Polk awards in 1967 and 1988, the latter with a citation said he "represented the highest standards of the profession. Whether covering U.S. presidents, civil rights activists or even gangland figures, he has demonstrated the tough-mindedness, courage and sensitivity that are in the best' tradition of the awards." Kempton's last column, Jan. 15, mused on the electoral victories of President Clinton and Speaker Newt Gingrich, compared with the downfall of Dick Morris, the presidential adviser disgraced by revelations of extramarital indiscretions.

Clinton and Gingrich, he wrote, "are alike in a readiness to have God frequently on their lips and a habitual tolerance for the seven deadly sins contending for attention within. And, unlike Dick Morris, they are much too smart to admit anything." GLENS FALLS Vickie (Carr) Brown was called home to her heavenly father on Monday, May 5, 1997, after a long battle with anorexia. a Pulitzer-Prize winner who championed underdogs and punctured the powerful in columns of elegant, thickly textured and lit times baroque prose, died Monday. I le was 79. Kempton, who last worked for Newsday, had been under treatment for cancer since last winter. The cause of death in a Manhattan nursing home was apparent heart failure, said Chiara Colctti, a friend and former colleague at Newsday. Kempton spent the greater part of a 55-ycar writing career in New York, working for the New York Post and Newsday.

Until a few years ago he was seen regularly with a clip above the right trouscr cuff pedaling a three-speed bicycle to news events. After winning a 1985 Pulitzer for commentary for "witty and insightful reflection on public issues" while working for Newsday, he said he went about his job by consulting The Associated Press schedule of events each morning and then heading wherever it led him. "I like to get around," Kempton said in an interview four years ago. "I need a scene, something to look at. I'd rather die than try to write out of my head four days a week." Walter Goodman of 77ie New York Times said in a review of "Rebellions, Perversities and Main Events," a 1994 collection of Kempton columns: writing was like nothing else in the Post or any other newspaper the demanding sentences with their rewarding rhythms and riffs, the venturesome allusions, the virtuoso wordplay that strained the rules of grammar and mocked the rules of journalism schools."
