Kennedy as a presidential nominee is propelling previously reluctant Democratic officials into President Johnson's embrace. Suddenly southern office-holders who were enthusiastically promoting schemes for registering a convention protest against the President's civil rights stance, such as voting for George Wallace, have fallen silent. White House representatives in touch with officials in even such states as Mississippi and Alabama are now there will be few southern defections from the President at the August convention in Chicago. However, hitch-hikers appear to be an institution that exists by public and police tolerance.

Mainly, one assumes, this is because so many people have sons who travel by that means, see the country, meet people and save a considerable amount of money thereby. Be that as it may, we do not endorse hitch-hiking or the encouragement of it by motorists. Like everything else, hitchhiking has known better days. Those, were the days before generous motorists were regarded as fair game for robbers and when, if an accident occurred, the hitch-hiker's first thought was not to sue the person who had befriended him. We do, however, recognize that lots of young people hitch-hike and many of them do it because no other mode of transportation is readily available.

None of Its Business The automotive industry and the auto-safety-conscious government do not always agree on the subject of safety and that is normal.

But the government through congressional action has the power to tell the industry what safety requirements must be met. That is constitutional. Now, however, a congressional committee is trying to compel the automotive industry to reveal cost data covering the installation of the safety devices required by law. That data, we think, is none of Congress's business. This question of the cost of safety devices arose when Ralph Nader, the people's gadfly, charged that the automakers were justifying price increases on the ground of the extra cost of safety features required by law.

Mr. Nader contended that these costs were vastly inflated. Mr. Nader may be' quite correct about this. As for ourselves, we are under no.

circumstances defending the price increases, or deploring them either. The whole question here is a congressional committee's right to demand the industry's statement of costs of mandatory safety features and to expect to get them. Its demand is based on the fact that the government buys vehicles from the manufacturers. This does not give the government any right to the companies' cost figures. These are their business secrets and the government is no more entitled to them than any other prospective customer might be.

When the government wants to purchase vehicles, it normally specifies its requirements and those companies wish Dill mciuamg open-nousing piuvibiuns. or wouia oniy narm me: -Qine Crosbv's choice for would only harm -1 I i cnances u.e ueieauea laou th iU sing. dead in Norby Walter's spot-'and d(1( Hoy Spiritj SQ tht am jng engagements after his presi- LOiiuiuait. iru wni ciiu iu nv" I hip timn Hi we joined the reporters and jGSS in need of excuses. dential announcement, Scm Ken the task of winning 90-year-old Headline sharers- Davan' and r.ari Haven's cent in tho cn "eaaiine-snarers.
