The lack of pertinent medical expense data can cause a pensioner to be deprived of his or her full entitlement to monthly pension benefits. All countable income, except unusual medical expenses, is the basis for determining the amount of pension due the pensioner, according to a press release from the State Division of Veterans' Affairs. Examples ol the more obvious medical expenses which should be listed are doctor's fees, dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids and prescription drugs. Some of the less evident but equally important medi- cai expenses are seeing-eye dog I I rAH maintenance, whirlpool baths for medical purposes and physical or speech therapy. Ambulance hire is also an excludable item.

Transportation expenses for medical purposes should be listed and maintained (seven cents a mile plus parking and tolls, or actual fares for taxis and buses), according to Veterans' Affairs. It is essential, the department says, that premiums for health, sickness or hospital insurance, including medical insurance under Medicare, be recorded and maintained. Detailed information on all aspects of veterans' pension, together with expert help in filing claims, may be obtained by contacting the local office of the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs located at Warren County Municipal Center Annex, Lake George, New York 12845.
