SAIGON (AP)-North Vietnam has scored its biggest gain since May 1, gobbling up the strategic Que Son Valley and laying bare to attack a populous 50-mile stretch of Highway 1 from Da Nang southward, field reports said Sunday. Da Nang is South Vietnam's second largest city.1 While the battlefield situation worsened for South Vietnam in the northern quarter of the South, improvement was reported in the southern half. Three major highways leading to Saigon two of them over which foodstuffs flow from the Mekong Delta and the central highlands were reopened to traffic. The highways had been closed since Friday by enemy attacks. A fourth highway remained cut about 35 miles north of Saigon.

In the air war, U.S. Air Force jets stepped up their attacks on North Vietnam's heartland, launching simultaneous raids on the northwest and northeast rail lines linking Hanoi with China, and shooting down the 160th MIG of the war, the U.S. Command announced. Both lines and a big railyard were reported heavily damaged and the Air Force said the raids would slow rail traffic headed south to Hanoi along portions of the network not already cut. The North Vietnamese capture of Que Son was significant in that it marked the first time in the entire war that the valley had fallen.

The battle for the valley, 40 miles south of Da Nang, cost the South Vietnamese heavy losses in men and equipment. The Saigon command acknowledged that 22 government troops were killed and about 130 Chess Game Ends in Draw REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Bobby Fischer pushed to within three points of the world chess championship by playing to a draw Sunday with Boris Spassky in the 16th game of their title match. METIVIER SARATOGA SPRINGS -A unique evening of diversified music was offered at Saratoga Performing Arts Center Saturday by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Gerry Mulligan and Chris Brubeck and the New Heavenly Blue rock group. William Smith, assistant conductor of the Philadelphians, was certainly the right man to conduct the Saturday concert.

He has made the afternoon student matinees very popular and the evening program drew scores of young people as well as the regular, excellent Saturday night crowd. The youngsters got a taste of the classical and the symphony fans got a full blast of rock. Both seemed to enjoy the in-between performance by Brubeck and Mulligan. The rock group and the orchestra opened the evening with three excerpts from Brubeck's cantata "Truth Is Fallin." As Brubeck warned the audience, "You are going to hear the loudest 10 or 15 minutes you ever heard with a symphony orchestra." He was right! The rock group, with eyery intrumnt amplified be a I IV. But the piece was an excellent example of the ability of one musical form to fit in with another and create a new sound. Brubeck, Mulligan, bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson joined the orchestra for excerpts from the oratorio, "The Light in the If anyone thinks the big bands are dead, they never heard the Philadelphia Orchestra swing. Even Arthur Fiedler would have been proud of the "pops" style of the Phildelphians.

The set with Brubeck and his quartet featured Mulligan on his baritone saxophone and Brubeck on the piano. The highlight was their lengthy performance of the Brubeck classic, "Take Five," which saw Brubeck toss in a few extra classical passages as a tribute to Saratoga. The program got a little long as the rocjters came onto play alone, then joined by the quartet. But the courage of SPAC officials to schedule such a program must be applauded. It was, overall, an excellent evening of music.
