March 1995 HOOF PRINT 97 Long Islanders were successful in 1994 problems. One of the most unusually bred horses in the LIDCTA high-score awards lineup was Belle de Crecy, ridden by Brian Forde. The mare is a Thoroughbred-Hanoverian-Quarter Horse cross. According to Forde, she has the erace the 1995 Pan AmencanGames dressage team with Metallic (the trials are held in February). These are but a few highlights of 1994, a year in which many Long Island horses and riders enjoyed success in the show ring and year-end awards.

the $2,500 World Champion Hunter Adult Amateur Finals at the National, and her story is truly amazing. "At the last moment, my horse became sick, and I had to borrow another," she recalled. Aboard Air Controllerowned by Mr. and Mrs. Neil Rego of Jamesport, she won the class.

Air Controller went on to become the 1994 LIPHA reserve champion in green working hunters. It was also a great year for Esme McCarthy of Huntington. McCarthy, 11, made her debut at the National in November and won the small pony hunter championship with Mistletoe. Mistletoe, who is soon to be outgrown, wound up as 1994 LIPHA small pony hunter champion, while McCarthy took reserve in pony equitation, and Mistletoe was also small pony hunter champion in the American Horse Shows Association's (AHSA) Zone 2 (New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania). Success was all in the family for the Toppings of Sagaponack.

Christian Topping tied for reserve in medium pony hunters for AHSA Zone 2 and won the 1994 LIPHA medium pony hunter championship with Robin Hood. His brother, Jagger, was third in the 1994 AHSA Zone 2 standings for amateur-owner hunters (18-30) with Fanfare. Andre de Leyer, son of Long Island's "galloping grandfather" Harry de Leyer, and his wife, Christine, earned a reserve championship in both AHSA and LIPHA adult amateur hunters (18-30) with Cover Girl. The LIPHA awarded championships in 22 divisions last year. Debra Wilcox of Riverhead proved the versatility of her Polish breeding stair hon, Bravado, by placing third in the LIPHA pre-green hunter division and winning the 1994 Long Island Dressage and Combined Training Association's LIDCTA) high-score award at training NO.
