3. Aileen. The St. Jude's ride was attended by eight riders, who raisied almost $500 for St Jude's. Four riders competed in the costume contest, and all won prizes! Thanks to Vikki for spearheading this event and to Ike and Maggie for helping to mark trails.

Don't forget to bring your pledge money to the next meeting. If you forgot to make your pledge, it's not too late; see Bea, Phyllis, Ike, Maggie, or Vikki at the meeting or at the Turkey Trot. Remember, the kids at St. Jude's will benefit from your contribution. horses and driven by our own Megan Joy out to the pumpkin patch, where everyone picked their own pumpkins.

Several members and leaders then toured the haunted barn, and with lots of screams and giggles made it through safely. November activities included trips, meetings, community-service projects, a bake sale, and the annual horse-program recognition dinner. Central New York Horse Club The Central New York Horse Club (CNYHC) presented its 1996 Golden Horseshoe Award to Dee deRosa of Syracuse, NY, at its September 19 meeting. The award recognizes those club members who provide a safe environment for their horses, keep structures and fences in good repair, and enhance the attractiveness of their properties. The program is modeled after Cornell Cooperative Extension's Dairy of Distinction Award and is the first of its kind in New York state.

DeRosa was awarded an attractive sign, sponsored again this year by Nu-trena Feeds, to display along the roadside of her property. The CNYHC meets monthly from September through June. Meetings feature various horse-industry-related speakers. The club offers trail rides, clinics, community service, member awards, and potluck suppers. New members and guests are always welcome.

Below, Sally Jo Crill models her high-point junior youth jacket while Kristi Herke on "Al" gets ready for the event Maher of Torrington, CT; Sarah Miller, Tyler Varsell, and Sarah McEachern of Goshen, CT; and Melissa Wheeler of Plymouth. This brings the total membership to eighteen and growing! The new slate of officers is off to a busy start preparing the calendar for the 1996-97 year. A busy, varied, and informative year is planned and will include guest speakers, barn tours, films, the UConn statewide competition, fund raisers, and more.

Once again this year, members will be required to research a topic for presentation to the club in order to enhance their public-speaking skills. Rebecca Wheeler gave a very informative presentation at the meeting on rodeo history and riding. Leatherstocking Riding Club This past August, thirteen members of the Leatherstocking Riding Club took a very educational trip to Cold River. We learned a lot about the area and about horse packing. September was a busy month.

It started with a ride and meeting at Bill's house in Hartwick. In mid-September, we had a nice day's ride at Bear Spring Mountain in Walton, NY, followed by a wonderful cookout and Kim's excellent chili. The weekend of the 21st, we headed for the Brookfield trail system. Eleven riders camped and rode the trails, and we were joined by several others on Saturday night for another campfire and lots of good food. Twenty-two campers set out for Otter Creek over the Columbus Day weekend.

The weather was great, the scenery was fantastic, and the riding and the company were superb. Lorrain Collar is excused, not due to snow or cold: A severely broken ankle may keep her from riding, but she still hosted our October meeting. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Thanks again for a wonderful year! Kimberwickes 4-H Club RENSSELAER, NY October was a busy month for the members of the Kimberwickes 4-H Club. The start of our 4-H year's activities was a fun day October 13 at the home of Hillary Senecal.

Club members and horses joined in a poker run through the woods and fields, gymkhana games, and the highlight of the day: bobbing for apples by the horses! A pizza party for members and their families followed the fun. Our regular business meeting was held October 18 at the Bayly's. We completed enrollment forms and planned the coming year's activities. Members also designed and made beautiful fall arrangements under the direction of leader Pam Bayly. Our last activity for the month was a trip to Viewmere Farms in Schaghticoke, NY, on October 26.

Club members rode in a hay wagon pulled by Percheron The Paso Fino attracted much attention and questions. Dr. Maria Encarnacion, our steward, was in awe of the success and camaraderie at the show (as well as of the Pasos). More importantly, she brought her teenaged daughter, Zari White, with her. Zari, who competes with Pasos, "volunteered" to help us with the show.

She was our ringmaster and ribbon "gal" in the ring. Anytime she needs a recommendation for her resume, the Northeast will be there for her. Thank you, Zari. Kudos to Dr. Margaret Fahringer for helping us to put our best foot forward in this inaugural event.

All the breeds were impressed with the way the horses were exhibited and worked off by you. Your explanations added clarity. Kristi Herke gave an added dimension to the Paso in front of a full house as she demonstrated pole bending at a full canter with her horse, "Al." And yes, Kristi with the help of Michael Bruce, Sally Jo Crill, and Danny DeAngelis proved the Paso Fino to be the smoothest breed in the water-glass contest The Wyckoffs all did well, with Harry beating Ron Moloff out in a work-off in the AO open pleasure class of thirteen. Montesina went on to win the pleasure championship with Bobby Yunits. She now has won her TOP.

Would like to hear of other horses achieving TOP. Michael Bruce won the performance championship on Imagen de la Clara. This year has been very successful; but, as all regions would agree, for this to continue we need more volunteers. Please contact an officer now or when you come to an event to ask how you can help out. Kudos to Tom Schneider (gatekeeper) and Betty Lou Herke (show secretary).

Dues are coming in. If you haven't paid, you may be one of the last. Please make our work easier. If you want to be in the '97 directory or place an ad, do so immediately. Contact Ron Moloff at (914) 472-4343.

Ernie Sanz, owner of 222, national champion four-year Fino colt, has graciously offered the Northeast a breeding. Guillermo Inglesis, newly elected president of the Florida region, also has given us breedings to Gaytero and El Juicio. Info to come. Li'l Bit of Class 4-H WEST GOSHEN, CT The last meeting of the 1995-96 4-H year was held with mixed emotions as our founder and president of two years, Suzy Clement, passed on her gavel to incoming President Rebecca Wheeler of Plymouth, CT. For the first time, the club held a formal induction ceremony for incoming and outgoing officers.

Officers received -pins inscribed with the offices they held. These pins will be displayed proudly on the jackets the club plans to order in the near future. Six new members joined the club at the meeting: Ryan Egan and Erica Anne I lb Paso Fino Horse MormiEAST Region What a time for our youth! New member Meghan Patridge captured a national reserve championship, while Kristi Herke won a third. Just in case Mason Dixon forgets to tell you, Montesina bested the pleasure-mare class of seventeen; and Bob Yunits scooped up the pleasure championship. Robert McMahon's filly, La Mirada, won performance schooling and the pleasure schooling and was reserve champion in Bella Forma.

Our inaugural gaited-horse show welcomed participants and spectators from all over the Northeast as well as from Tennessee, Georgia, and Canada. The show was an absolute success with well over 100 horses. The Icelandics were seen as "rockets," flying out of the arena with various colored ribbons. Sunday saw riders exchanging mounts and trying one another's breeds. (We think God took the best of each of the other gaited breeds and created the Paso Fino but the other breed enthusiasts probably feel the same about their breeds.) Darlene Langdon of Dickinson Center, NY, and Stormy enjoy the Brasher Falls trails.

Brasher Falls trail ride BRASHER FALLS, NY The weekend of September 21-22 was a fun one for horse people at the Brasher Falls State Trails. Saturday afternoon, many riders enjoyed lovely fall weather and color on the trails. That evening, everyone enjoyed the beef barbecue donated by Mike LaVare of Brasher Iron Works and music provided by local talent. Many people camped at the Riverside Campgrounds, a scenic spot along the St. Regis River and a short ride from the trail system.

Many people met up again the following two weekends at Barnhart Island, Massena, NY; and at the C.C. Dam area in North Lawrence, NY..
